I took Talmage to the Pediatric dentist in March of this year. He checked his teeth and for some reason asked me if he had a thumb or a pacifier he was attached to. "Why do you ask?" I didn't say, but the dentist went on to tell me that Tal's overbite was in the top ten worst he has ever seen. The boy was not even two yet. Nonetheless the nice doctor told me I needed to get him to stop soon. I was more bugged than anything. I know he has buck teeth, but I couldn't imagine taking that comfort away from him so soon. Then for his two year well child check, I told the Pediatrician what the dentist said. He was shocked and assumed it wasn't a pediatric dentist that I saw. So, he took a look at the monster teeth and then agreed--this habit needed to stop!
I felt so cruel taking his thumb away from him when he is only a two year old. But as months passed, Jason and I agreed his teeth were getting worse. So in August I ordered a torture device called the Thumbguard.
I put it on the day it came in the mail. I was so nervous he was going to throw a fit and not sit still for me to put the bracelet on. He sat for me and watched intently. I got it on him and he shot up and said, "Rocket ship!" with his thumb up in the sky taking off! This wasn't a one time thing. He always sat still for me and let me put it on him. He would however get mad and try to pull it off when he was going to sleep. So those first few nights were awful, let alone the napless days. But then he got used to it. He is thumb free and still able to sleep, he just wakes up a lot earlier now. Sometimes earlier than Morgan. Ugh.

Where did you order that contraption? Do they sell them for finger suckers, too? I have a little girl who likes her pointer finger... she's five now and I need some help getting her to stop! :)
i don't know if you see my blog, it is private. Email me (annehillstead@yahoo.com) if you aren't permitted with your email and I'll add you.
Lisa, it's good to know those things exist. Lilly is a constant thumb sucker. It's really cute now, but when she gets older I know it won't be so cute. I didn't know it could do so much damage to the teeth! Should I try and stop her now, do you think?
I'm sur we'll have to get one of those things when its time to get Magan to stop sucking her thumb! Glad to know it went well! Your kids are soooo dang cute!!!
I was just about to ask the same thing Anne did. Both my twins suck their fingers (and Abby twirls knots in her hair) and I don't know how I'm EVER going to get them to stop!
No fun for any of you. But better now than later. I went through all sorts of things to stop sucking my own thumb when I was little. but my sister in law's one thumb is actually shorter than the other because of compression from sucking it for so long.
I agree with Julie. Better now then later. Although I didn't have buck teeth, I sucked my thumb until I was 8. Not cool.
I hope things are going better now.
Lisa!!! I almost deleted the email that gave me your blog. I obviously didn't recognize the lst name Holt. I was so glad that I opened it though! Your kids are adorable! I think I only ever saw Morgan and that was when she was a baby. Wow! I love her model pose picture. Kids are just the best aren't they?...Most of the time anyway.
